Four Ways We Remove Toxins From The Body

As much as we may not like to admit it, we live in a pretty toxic world. The amount of chemicals in our environment have increased dramatically over the last 100 years, and the numbers only keep growing.

Toxins are found in the water we drink, in the products we use, and many of the foods we eat, all in the form of pollutants, chemicals, and pesticides.

A 2004 study of umbilical cord blood in 10 babies found an average of 200 chemicals in the blood, 287 chemicals total, 180 of which are known to be cancer causing.

While you may try your best at eliminating toxins or using toxic-free products, it is impossible to avoid exposure on some level.

In what ways can we naturally help the body remove toxins?

There are 4 ways in which our body removes toxins.

1. Pee. Our kidneys primary role is to cleanse the blood by removing toxins and turning those waste products into urine. The kidneys also help maintain balance of the body’s fluids.

Every time we urinate, our body is removing toxins and waste from the body. In order to help our kidneys best do their job, ensure that you are also giving them what they need by staying hydrated.

Unfortunately, most of our water supply is tainted with toxins and chemicals (remember Flint, MI). Opt for filtered water when able, and as a general rule of thumb, drink half your body weight in ounces of water on the daily.

2. Sweat. While some camps say that sweating does not help remove toxins from the body, there is evidence to show that we really can flush out certain toxins as we sweat, mainly, heavy metals such as mercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium.

Using a sauna for 20 minutes is also a great way to induce sweating, and the benefits of sauna are not just in helping to push toxins out of the body. Use of sauna has also been shown to benefit people who deal with chronic pain and chronic fatigue, along with having heart health benefits.

3. Breath. Deep breathing brings in oxygen to the body, and when we exhale, we actually send out toxins and carbon dioxide as well. Carbon dioxide is a natural toxin which we can only remove from the body through our breath.

4. Poop! Food goes in and poop comes out! Bowel movements are one of the most important ways that our body is able to remove toxins from the body. We literally take the foods we eat, remove whatever nutrients we can, and expel the waste and toxins that we don’t need.

And, if you’ve ever had the dreaded doo-doo fever, you know that not being able to have a bowel movement is one of the worst feelings ever.

Drinking lots of water will help your kidneys flush out toxins, it will also help your bowels move with more ease.

Since removing toxins from the body is crucial for optimal health, ensuring optimization of toxin removal is key.

I’d love to know, aside from these four ways to detox, what other ways have you used to detox and minimize toxins in your everyday life?
