Mineral Depletion And It’s Effect On The Body
Have you ever done a really hard workout where you had sweat so much, that you saw that little white line embedded into your shirt...or hat?
If this has happened to you, then you know what I’m talking about.
I didn’t know that this was sodium being excreted through sweat. But it makes sense.
And when we sweat a lot, what do we do?
We replenish our body by giving it more fluids.
Or, if you’ve ever gotten a stomach bug that has you running to the restroom every few minutes, you know that you have to rehydrate. Get those electrolytes back in the body. Because being deficient and losing minerals can feel pretty crummy in the short term.
But what about the long-term?
What about all the days that we are just using up all our minerals, without knowing that we need to replenish them?
What then? And how do we even know?
What is a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis Test?
A Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis test is a lab used to test mineral levels in the body. Along with minerals and ultra-trace minerals, this lab can also show if there are any heavy metal toxicities that have built up in the body as well.
Stress can deplete the body of minerals, or can hinder the absorption of those minerals. Medications can also deplete our stores, and our diet, even if we eat healthily, can be depleted of minerals as well.
For me, I knew that I had been under stress for many years. My body was dealing with a lot of physical stress, chronic stress, pain, medications on the daily. What I didn’t know was that my mineral stores were depleted.
All the years of chronic pain, stress, caffeine, medications…DEPLETED MY MINERALS.
When I got the results back, they were clear as day. My body was deficient in all my minerals. ALL OF THEM.
Calcium- LOW.
Magnesium – LOW.
Sodium- LOW.
Potassium- LOW.
My body had been stressed for so long that all my minerals were low. Abysmally low.
Heavy Metals
This test also found aluminum levels slightly elevated, along with mercury. These are two of the most common heavy metals that we are exposed to are aluminum and mercury.
Aluminum is a common ingredient in deodorant. We also find it in cans, and use it frequently for cooking.
Mercury is found in many larger fish, and is also found in amalgam fillings.
These slight elevations were not significant enough for me to worry about, but it is something that I will be keeping an eye on in the future.
Why is an HTMA important?
Aside from understanding how mineral levels can show the level of stress in the body and the body’s stress response, the ratios among minerals are also beneficial.
Ratios between minerals are also important and can provide a lot of insight into the inner workings of the body.
The ratio of calcium to potassium is interesting to look at because it showed that my body had been in a higher sympathetic state and slowed body energy. Hence, it was depleted from high levels of stress, and the response to that stress was no longer there.
When I saw that, I was like “YES”.
ALL OF THIS, and more, is what I found out about myself.
I love the idea of being able to test my minerals and have data about what is going on inside my body and how my body is responding to stress.
And to be honest, wouldn’t you want to know if your mineral levels are low?
Or, if your body is hoarding minerals, wouldn’t you want to know why?
And how to correct it?
So our bodies can function optimally?
Instead of just getting by?
How can that change your life? For me, having this data and a plan to implement after is what has made all the difference. I have more energy throughout the day. I do not feel as “stressed” as I used to. I am supporting my body and giving it what it needs.
I am replenishing my deficiencies. I am giving my body back the minerals that had been used up during a highly stressful decade of my life.
The body is an amazing thing. And when we are able to look inside to see how it is functioning, we can get a really good understanding of where our imbalances are and where our deficiencies are as well.
Once we know what we are lacking, where we are imbalanced, we can work to rebalance the body.
And when you are able to rebalance your body, magic happens.
You start to feel better.
You start to have a little more energy that you are used to.
You find that you aren’t completely drained after an easy workout.
You find that you are able to go through the day without needing to nap.
You find that you are able to handle stress more easily.
You find that you don’t have as many random symptoms that never seemed to have any cause.
You start to realize how good it feels to feel good.
And when you FEEL good, you start making all your impossible dreams possible.
And that feels so freakin’ good.
Don’t let imbalances keep you from living your best feeling life.
