What Is PEMF Therapy And How Can It Help With Pain?

I sat outside, the sea breeze blowing through my hair, energy vibrating through my body, and tears running down my face.

“Has anyone else ever cried after a PEMF session?”, I thought to myself.

Probably not.

I found solace in knowing it was my body needing to find an outlet for detoxing the broken, busted up, cells that were trying to heal within my body.

Or so I’d like to tell myself.

Sunday, I had my first PEMF Therapy session.

I got to chat with the practitioner after the session while he worked on another client, and I got a lot of insight into how this therapy is used and how it works.

PEMF is used often with equine vets and is also used with athletes to aid in muscle and injury recovery.

If PGA golfers, MLB athletes, and horses find it helpful, then it most definitely can be helpful for others suffering with chronic pain!

What is PEMF Therapy?

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy works by sending a magnetic current into the body to help stimulate cell metabolism, increase oxygen to the cells, as well as help reduce inflammation.

PEMF is thought to set off a reaction within the body that signals an increase in Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), the energy within the cells, which then allows the cell walls to increase their permeability, receive more oxygen, and help rid the body of waste materials.

This process allows the body to heal itself naturally and recover more quickly.

Benefits of PEMF

PEMF if said to:

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Increase circulation

  • Reduce pain

  • Increase range of motion

  • Increase energy

What to expect from a PEMF session?

I had never heard of PEMF until two days before my initial session.

While talking with my massage therapist about the pain I get in my shoulders, she casually mentioned that she was going to have someone in her office over the weekend doing PEMF, and that I should definitely give it a try.

When I went in for my session, the practitioner explained that the rings he was going to use first would be sending a magnetic current that went 16 inches deep.

As he placed the rings on my “problem” areas (AKA my shoulders were many women carry their stress and tension), I felt the current start on my back and gently make it’s way out my abdomen.

For anyone who has ever used a TENS machine, the feeling was very similar to the sensation, except you could feel the currents deep within the body.

After the rings, I laid down on a pulsing mat and listened to binaural beats to induce deep relaxation.

The mat was programmed to vibrate in tandem with the base of the binaural beats, which created a very calming effect on my body. Tears streamed down my face in sheer appreciation for the calm that I felt in the moment.

Results

I have to admit, after one session, my body feels lighter and more energized. I felt actual waves of energy running off my body post-session, and it really was a magical feeling.

“This is what total healing feels like” I told myself.

For anyone who is struggling with chronic pain, injury and/or inflammation, this may be something new to try.

Our bodies can only heal when we have shifted out of the sympathetic state (fight or flight) and into the parasympathetic (rest and relax) state of the nervous system.

This is why being able to effectively handle stressors in life is so important to our overall wellness.
This is why being able to effectively handle our emotions in life is so important to healing.

Our wellness depends on it.
